Two CHST postgraduate students, Yong Cherng Liin and Sim Sheng Wei, presented their work at the 10th IEEE Conference on Systems, Process & Control (ICSPC2022) on 17 December 2022 under CHST Excellent Award Fund.
Chern Liin presented his work entitled, “Human Tracking and Following using Machine Vision on a Mobile Service Robot”. His work develops a system that enables robots to track and follow the movements of humans, therefore improving efficiency and productivity and reducing humans’ need to perform physically demanding or dangerous tasks. This technology could be integrated into assistive devices to help people with mobility issues perform their daily activities, giving them greater independence and autonomy. Chern Liin mentioned that he had the pleasure of presenting at the ICSPC2022 conference and was impressed by the organization and professionalism of the event. The organizing committee was composed of experts in various research fields, and they did an excellent job of preparing for the conference and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. It is worth mentioning that Chern Liin also won the best paper award at the conference.
Another postgraduate student, Sim Sheng Wei, presented the title of “Development of an Autonomous Mobile Manipulator for Pick and Place Operation Using 3D Point Cloud”. This work aims to solve the limitation in Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) by adding a manipulator coupled with compensation techniques such as using 3D point clouds for object segmentation. Sim enthused, “ Aside from the professional benefits, attending this conference was also a personal highlight. I had the chance to meet new people, explore a new location, and learn about different cultures and perspectives. It was a fun and enriching experience that allowed me to expand my horizons and connect with others.”
